In the country: Devon. This is a 1912 hunting lodge in Chulmleigh, expensively renovated, with five bedrooms, three receptions, a study, rolling views and a near-acre of land. Some, however, might find it remote, it being on its own a mile from town. Yours for £595,000.

Wreck of the week: Cornwall. This four-bed farmhouse in Wendron was formerly used as a cafe. It’s pretty rough – £80,000 would replaster, rewire, etc – but that’s in addition to the £350,000 price tag. There was once planning permission to add a room on top of the kitchen, and council planners may need to be involved if you want to lose the commercial usage. However, get past those hurdles and you’ll enjoy wide green vistas and two acres of land.

Dream home: Dorset. It’s hard to believe this handsome, light house in Sturminster Newton was built in the 1980s. The interior is clean and bright, and with the exception of the living room – where the fireplace looks dated – all the fixtures and fittings look reasonably contemporary. It has a fabulous completely glazed dining area, but what really makes it stand out is the garden and surrounding land: you walk straight off the terrace, over a little footbridge and into the paddock. There’s also an enclosed holding yard with two stables. Cost: £475,000.

Overseas home: France. Snow, provided there’s enough of it, makes everything look beautiful. We suspect this resort in Belle Plagne would be considerably less attractive without its frosting, but you can’t criticise its situation: it sits at 2,300m in front of Mont Blanc and allows buyers to take advantage of more than 420km of slopes in Les Arcs, Peise y-Vallandry and La Plagne. The interiors are cosy, tastefully furnished and have splendid views. Each has its own balcony and residents can use the swimming pool, whirl pool, sauna and fitness room, Turkish baths and massage salon. From €194,000 for a one-bed apartment on a leaseback basis with 4.6% yield and one-week usage.
