Wreck of the week: Cumbria. Gilsland, near Brampton, is the setting for this former farmhouse and outbuildings being sold by English Heritage. For sale by auction with a reserve price of £700,000, it has been uninhabited for 30 years. It has two bedrooms and sits next to a stretch of Hadrian’s Wall, while its neighbour is a Roman fort.

In the country: Shropshire. Two huge inglenooks dominate the reception rooms in this three-bed 17th-century cottage in Kempton, near Lydbury North. It’s a shame you have to cross one bedroom to reach another, and the third is isolated up a separate staircase from the narrow kitchen, but the half-acre of gardens surrounding it might make the difference. Cost: £340,000.
