In the country: Devon This house in Dunsford, near Exeter, is in Dartmoor national park and has an unconverted barn to expand into, four beamed bedrooms, attics with potential, and large grounds. What’s not to like? Traditionalists may be upset by the upstairs sitting room and three downstairs bedrooms.

Wreck of the week: London This is a £399,950 two-bed end-of-terrace in Nunhead, SE15. External cracks could mean it needs underpinning as well as an overhaul, but if you take it on you'll get original features including a 7m-plus sitting room and 27m garden. It's only two beds, however, because the big bathroom claimed the third bedroom. If underpinning is needed, the costs could exceed the value.

Dream home: Devon. £440,000 may seem a lot for this cottage in South Pool with two compact bedrooms – but it’s not the house you’re paying for. It’s the location at the head of a small creek, a boat ride away from the rest of Salcombe estuary. There are window seats in the beamed living room and both bedrooms overlook the long lawn to the water. You could resurrect the large stone fireplace in time for the winter storms.
