Wreck of the week: Essex. Tillingham near Southminster is the location of this £375,000 four-bed detached house. It looks good inside, but needs new wiring and fittings – in excess of £50,000 would do it – and the kitchen is just a 2m-wide galley. But it’s teeming with quaint features, is close to the sea and has country views, as well as an integral double bay cart lodge. A Grade II-listing could cramp your style.

In town: West Yorkshire. If the four double bedrooms squeeze you, you can expand into the two large cellars of this large stone house in Savile Park, Halifax, with its high, corniced ceilings.
