Snooping around: Homes with annexes

Belton Duffey
Property of the week: Little Walsingham, Norfolk. It’s space on a budget in this unusual English village, a centre of pilgrimage with two shrines, a ruined abbey and regular cassocked visitors. On pilgrimage day a colourful procession of the devout passes the ancient windows of this 400-year-old cottage. Beyond the front door lie three receptions and five bedrooms with enticing beams and window seats, but it’s in need of a makeover. Cost: £189,000.

Wreck of the week: Pwllheli, Gwynedd. This one-bed cottage was once the village schoolhouse. In addition to the £215,000 asking price, a £30,000 investment should give you a bathroom, kitchen and makeover. Planning permission is also pending for redevelopment into a three- to four-bed house. If this is denied the price will plummet, but you’ll be left with a Lilliputian home. It’s on the exquisite Lleyn Peninsula and is a short drive from Snowdonia.

Take three: homes with annexes. For £299,950 you can snaffle this three-bedder near Burnham Market, Norfolk. It boasts two receptions, a kitchen, utility room, study area and bathroom. Across the winsome courtyard garden is a one-bed annexe with shower room, ideal for granny. Converting the adjacent garden store means she’d even get a kitchen. A neighbour has right of way through the garden gate in between said store and the annexe.

Take three: homes with annexes. This house in Battle, East Sussex, served as the lodge to the Ashburnham estate. £650,000 buys you two receptions, a kitchen/breakfast room, a utility room, three beds, two bath/shower rooms and a garden. Within the timber-clad garage is a bathroom and a first-floor games room, though you’ll need planning permission to convert it for residential use. A shame it’s near two busy main roads.

Take three: homes with annexes. An oak-panelled hall and large stylish rooms dominate this four-bedder near Tadcaster, North Yorkshire. For £475,000 you get two receptions, a kitchen, a utility room, a cloakroom and a bathroom. Guests or intolerable teenagers can be stowed away in a 17th-century drover’s cottage in the acre-and-a-half of garden. Unfortunately the house’s good looks are confined to the inside.
