Snooping around: Homes under £150,000

Dumfries & Galloway
Property of the week: Killantringan Lighthouse Cottages, Dumfries & Galloway. A ship carrying wellies ran aground in a storm in 1982, and the wreck can still be seen below this former lighthouse keeper’s house. The rugged coastland can be viewed through the wraparound conservatory, and the six-bed main house and detached three-bed cottage mean you need never be alone. The disused tower is owned by the Northern Lighthouse Board. Cost: £650,000.

Wreck of the week: Surbiton, Surrey. This two-bed Victorian semi is derelict and unsafe. The kitchen has been removed due to the unsound floor, and the roof terrace is collapsing. Reckon on spending £100,000 to bring it all up to snuff, and that’s on top of the £450,000 asking price. It’s an eight-minute walk to the shops, cafes and mainline station, which offers services into London Waterloo. The only garden is to the front and side.

Take three: homes under £150,000. This dinky ex-railworker’s cottage near Northumberland has decent-sized rooms and rolling, green views. £139,950 buys you a reception room, kitchen/breakfast room, a bedroom and bathroom. There are lawned gardens front and back, and off-street parking. The coastal town of Bamburgh is three miles away and it’s less than a mile to the A1. But it’s also next to the north-east mainline.
