This piece of beautiful Victoriana has views over the gorge to Europe’s first iron bridge - you’re just a couple of minutes’ stroll away from this world heritage site. Inside, three of the four bedrooms have cast-iron fireplaces, there’s an inglenook in the kitchen/diner, and long sash windows and woodblock flooring throughout. Dramatic views stretch from the four-tiered garden Cost: £329,950.

Wreck of the week: Hayle, Cornwall. This Edwardian house - with a guide price of £300,000 - is derelict and possibly doomed. It’s built of shuttered concrete - £100,000 may restore it for the short term, but you could build something in its place for £300,000. It’s close to the beach and soon-to-be-revamped harbour, and has 2.75 acres of land. Similar-sized estates around here fetch £750,000. You won’t raise a mortgage on the current structure.

Take three: homes near great pubs. This is a budget foothold in the Strand-on-the-Green conservation area in west London. For £325,000 you get an open-plan reception room/kitchen, a bedroom and a bathroom. The house has been glamorously renovated and there is a decked courtyard garden. Next door is the Bell & Crown, a waterfront pub once used by smugglers. This is, however, one of the smallest freehold detached houses in west London - it’s 8ft wide.

Freeman Forman
Take three: homes near great pubs. Three pubs are a few minutes’ amble down the lane from this three-bedder near Etchingham, East Sussex, including Rudyard Kipling’s favourite watering hole, the Bell Inn. For £585,000 you get two reception rooms, a galley kitchen, larder, bathroom and carport. There is unspoilt period allure in the two inglenooks, exposed timbers and wooden floors, while outside lushly planted gardens offer spectacular views.
