Snooping around: Homes for less than £150,000

Jackson-Stops & Staff
Property of the week: Veryan, near St Mawes, Cornwall. The village is noted for its four quirky round houses. This fifth one is so cunningly concealed the tourists often miss it. The kitchen and dining area are round and divided by an Aga set into a central chimney, and two of the three bedrooms and the sitting room have vaulted ceilings. It’s a shame the lounge and master bedroom are in an extension separated by a corridor. Cost: £495,000.

Wreck of the week: Aldeburgh, Suffolk. This listed, three-bedroom, 300-year-old cottage needs a thorough update, new floors and possibly other structural work - £60,000 upwards should do it, on top of the £385,000 price tag. From the front the views are across moorland, and at the back over open farmland. The rooms are a decent size and lavishly beamed, with an inglenook fireplace in the dining room. It’s close to the coast and upmarket Southwold.

Take three: homes under £155,000. You can stride out on to Bodmin Moor from the village of Pensilva, near Liskeard, Cornwall, where this two-bedder resides. For £150,000 you also get two reception rooms, a kitchen, bathroom and outbuildings. Inside there are beams, exposed stone walls, a wood-burning stove and a stone fireplace. The garden is a good size and there’s space to extend, if not for your car - it lives on the street at the end of the lane.

Take three: homes under £155,000. Canal walks and the National Forest are on the doorstep of this semi in Measham, Leicestershire. You get two receptions, a kitchen and four bedrooms, as well as a decent bit of garden. Not bad for the less-than-princely sum of £139,950. It does need renovating and possible structural work, but there’s no chain. Those of you with a weak bladder may resent the fact the bathroom is two storeys below the bedrooms.

Humberts
Take three: homes under £155,000. Possibly a former coach house, this two-bedroom cottage in Clun, Shropshire, is festooned with venerable features such as a vast stone fireplace, a cast-iron range in the kitchen, oak floors, ceiling beams and a half-rounded window in one bedroom. It’s a brief stroll to the village, and you’re surrounded by countryside. It’s a shame there’s a right of way across the small yard that serves as a garden. Cost: £150,000.
