Snooping around: Glass homes

Samuel Wood & Co
Property of the week: Aston-on-Clun, Shropshire. This £225,000 grade II-listed toadstool, with segment-shaped rooms circling a central chimney, was built as a bakery two centuries ago. It has beams, a stone inglenook, and pastoral views from casement windows. It’s on a no-through road in a village that has retained its pub and shop, while Ludlow is nine miles away. Ravishing scenery is all around, but the roof needs attention and the decor updating.

Wreck of the week: Kinrossie, Perthshire. This three-bedroomed cottage with an attached byre is on the market for £220,000. The main house is merely weary - the challenge is to expand into the cow shed (subject to consent) and extend the kitchen. A further £60,000 so should cover it. The cottage is on the edge of the conservation village of Kinrossie, while the rooms and south-facing garden are generous, and there are gentle rural views to enjoy.

Take three: glass homes. A local builder created this for himself in Bideford, north Devon, four years ago, and for £750,000 it can now be yours. The double-height living area is glass-walled on one side, with a stone chimney breast, and there’s a galleried reception room, a kitchen/breakfast room, a utility room, a study, five bedrooms and four bathrooms. From the hot tub in the two-acre garden you can gaze to the coast. It is two miles to a sandy beach.

Take three: glass homes. You enter through the sedate Victorian suburbia of Twickenham, Middlesex, and exit via a dazzling glass cube attached to the back. The garden feeds into 16 acres of parkland shared by residents. Inside there are two reception rooms, an open-plan kitchen/dining/family room, a second kitchen/laundry room, six bedrooms, three bathrooms and cellar. All of which costs, of course. Some £1.795m to be precise.

Take three: glass homes. This was once the kitchen garden and greenhouses of an estate near Chichester, West Sussex. It has three receptions, a kitchen/dining room, conservatory, four/five beds, four bathrooms and a pavilion with kitchen. Glass doors lead into the amply windowed rooms with a mixture of Tuscan limestone and polished hardwood floors. Outside there is 55 acres, a tennis court, water gardens and cherry orchard. But no garage. Cost: £3.5m. Jackson-Stops & Staff, 01243 786316 Photograph: Jackson-Stops & Staff/Jackson-Stops & Staff
