Snooping around: Georgian homes

Lang & Co
Property of the week: Plympton, Devon. This grade II-listed bungalow is thought to be the last surviving Napoleonic telegraph station, designed to alert London within four minutes to any sign of the French. Pastoral seclusion is its most fetching feature: it sits at the end of a long drive amid large gardens, and is surrounded by farmland. Both bedrooms are doubles and there are two reception rooms. It is slightly dated inside. Yours for £275,000.

Wreck of the week: Malpas, Cheshire. This £220,000 detached, three-bed cottage is down but not out - £30,000 should install central heating, renew the large kitchen and bathroom and revive the decor. You could create off-road parking via a neighbouring drive over which you have right of way, while you rent a portion of the garden from the council for a nominal sum. You have to cross the bathroom to reach the third bedroom, but the layout is flexible.

Jackson-Stops & Staff
Take three: Georgian homes. This grade II-listed five-bedder in Chichester, West Sussex, is within the city walls. For £675,000 you get three receptions, a kitchen, a bathroom, a cloakroom and a cellar. Most of the main rooms have half-height panelling and fireplaces, but a recent stint as offices means it needs cosmetic care. There’s a walled garden at the back and it is a good-looking stroll from here to the shops, theatre and cathedral.

Take three: Georgian homes. This six-bedder in Wirksworth, Derbyshire, is noteworthy enough for a place in the Pevsner Buildings Of England guide. For £595,000 you get two receptions, a kitchen, four bath/shower rooms and a garage. An oak staircase shimmies up three storeys, lit by tall mullioned windows, while the hallway boasts flagstones and panelling and the kitchen is Aga-warmed. There is also a walled garden to shelter you from the busy street.

Abbotts Countrywide
Take three: Georgian homes. A throng of period embellishments at this four-bedder have thankfully survived recent renovations. Situated in Ormesby, Norfolk, you get two receptions, a kitchen, four bath/shower rooms, a garden room and a detached barn. The garden itself spreads down to open countryside, close to the Broads. The Victorian barn could make itself domestically useful. Yours for £480,000.
