Snooping around

Grantown on Spey property
Property of the week: Grantown-on-Spey, Morayshire This architect-designed wilderness hideaway is a length of glass, stone and unfinished larchwood balanced on a south-facing hillside with vast views over the Cairngorms. Skiing is 30 minutes away and there is fishing and hiking in the nearby lochs and hills. Inside it’s more urban chic. The only midge in the ointment is the more traditional-looking neighbour next door. Cost: £560,000.

Property Rye cottage
Wreck of the week: High Street, Rye, East Sussex. Yours for £195,000, this shell is one of a pair of grade II-listed outbuildings. Mains services can be connected, but at a cost of £100,000. There is planning permission for a three-bedroom house with one reception room - you’ll be concealed from the outside world, yet in the heart of this citadel town. However, there is no parking and you share the courtyard.

Castle Combe property
Take three: homes in film locations. Rex Harrison filmed Dr Dolittle here, it was a backdrop for Poirot and Robin Of Sherwood, and it played host to Robert De Niro and Sienna Miller making Stardust. This 400-year-old -cottage in Castle Combe, Wiltshire, has two bedrooms, two bathrooms, two receptions, study, a bespoke kitchen and a view of the church. The only downside is the tiny garage and lack of on-street parking. Cost: £595,000.

Pluckley property
Take three: homes in film locations. Catherine Zeta Jones bustled into the nation’s consciousness after filming The Darling Buds Of May here in Pluckley, Kent - said to be the most haunted village in England. For £595,000 you get two receptions, four bedrooms, two bathrooms and a garage, all part of a coach house and stables belonging to the local manor, which burned down in the 1950s.

Alnwick property
Take three: homes in film locations. On the outside this town house with a large walled garden in Alnwick, Northumberland, proved the perfect backdrop for Robin Hood: Prince Of Thieves, Elizabeth, Mary Queen Of Scots and Harry Potter. But inside the three receptions, gun room, conservatory, kitchen/breakfast room, cellar, six bedrooms, two bathrooms, two box rooms and a garage would make a convincing set for an 80s retrospective. Cost: £595,000.
