Snooping around

County Durham
Property of the week: Wolsingham, County Durham. Swoon at this glamorous school and chapel conversion. The main living area soars up to the apex ceiling and is straddled by a glass walkway from a mezzanine sitting area to the first-floor bedrooms. The floors, stairs and kitchen units are solid oak. It’s just a shame the school building is divided into three and the neighbours share access. Cost: £295,000.

West Sussex
Wreck of the week: Chichester, West Sussex. There are major structural problems with this two-bedroomer, which means upwards of £100,000 is needed to get it together, on top of the £450,000 asking price. Underpinning is essential, but you could always knock it down and start again. There are some pretty period fancies worth saving though, such as stained-glass windows and art deco fireplaces.

Doncaster
Take three: homes with businesses attached. This three-bedroom house near Doncaster, South Yorkshire, has two reception rooms, a kitchen/breakfast room, sun room, bathroom, two barns and outbuildings. There are three lakes in the grounds, in which the public can fish for a fiver a rod, and there’s room for horses in the 16 acre paddock. Before arriving, phone the signal box to check it’s safe to cross the nearby railway line. Cost: £595,000.

Scottish Highlands
Take three: homes with businesses attached. Fancy owning a four-star, self-catering idyll close to the shore of Loch Linnhe in the Scottish Highlands? Then this £840,000 complex is for you. You get an open-plan living/kitchen area and three bedrooms for yourself, while six similar lodges are let out at a £100,000 annual profit. Guests get free wireless broadband and golf club membership, but can be a demanding bunch.

Wiltshire
Take three: homes with businesses attached. This deceptively large period house in Mere, Wiltshire, has two reception rooms, a conservatory, five bedrooms, two cellars, and a butchers shop at the front and a two-bedroom detached cottage out back. There’s a large garden, a 31ft kitchen and en suite bedrooms in the cottage. All of which is offset slightly by a front door that opens on to queueing customers. It’ll set you back a meaty £650,000.
