Snoop Dogg becomes owner of record label that launched his career 30 years ago

Snoop Dogg has acquired Death Row Records - the record label that helped launch his hugely successful career three decades ago.

The hip-hop mogul, 50, has become the new owner of the company after buying out MNRK Music Group.

While terms of the deal weren't disclosed, the purchase takes Snoop firmly back to his roots.

The label was set up by Dr Dre, Suge Knight, the DOC, and Dick Griffey and want on to become one of the industry's biggest labels.

Along with Snoop, the label was responsible for launching culture-shifting artists such as Tupac Shakur.

Despite its musical success, the label was shrouded in controversy after a number of lawsuits were filed against them due to criminal activity.

The label's co-founder Suge remains behind bars.

Over the years, the company has struggled financially, filing for bankruptcy in 2006 before being acquired by WIDEawake Entertainment at auction three years later.

It has since changed hands several times before ending up with the Drop It Like It's Hot singer.

Although Snoop left the company under a cloud and went on to sign with a number of other labels, including No Limit Records, Capitol and Def Jam, he is thrilled to be back where it all began.

In a statement he said: "It feels good to have ownership of the label I was part of at the beginning of my career and as one of the founding members. This is an extremely meaningful moment for me.

"I would like to personally thank the teams at Blackstone, MNRK and especially David Kestnbaum, who worked collaboratively with me over several months to make this exciting homecoming a reality."

Blackstone's senior managing director, David Kestnbaum, also praised the singer for his part in the dealings. He said: "We at Blackstone are strong supporters of the artist and creator community in our entertainment
investments.

"We are excited to put the Death Row Records brand back in the hands of a legend like Snoop Dogg. We wish him success in the years ahead as the brand moves forward under his leadership and vision."

Fans and famous faces went on to congratulate the singer on Instagram for his acquisition as he posted a video to his 67.8 million followers.

Among those offering messages of support were rapper Dave East who wrote: "Yeeeeah Unc!!!!"

Rapper Slim Thugg was also quick to comment, simply saying: "Congrats."

And Calico Jones said: "BACK LIKE WE NEVER LEFT !!!!!!!!!!! @snoopdogg"

Fans also got excited when the official Death Row Records Twitter account shared the news alongside the short caption: "Ownership. ⁦@SnoopDogg"

Snoop is set to perform at this weekend's Super Bowl as part of an all-star line-up which also features Dr. Dre, Eminem, Mary J Blige, and Kendrick Lamar.
