The US women’s national football team have found an unexpected ally in their fight for equal pay: hip hop legend Snoop Dogg.
Ahead of the team’s final match against the Netherlands on Sunday, which saw them beat the Dutch team 2-0, Snoop shared a video on Instagram in support of the women’s team, calling out the pay discrepancy that exists between men and women in the sport.
“Shout out to the US women’s soccer team for their fourth World Cup,” he captioned the post.
“They only get $90K (£72K) per player, but the men, if they win it, they get $500K (£399K) per player.”
The performer continued to outline the startling disparity stating: “The sorry ass f*cking men from the US soccer team.
“Everyone’s sh*t, ain’t ever gonna win sh*t, can’t even get out the f*cking first round.
“Man, pay them ladies, man. Pay them girls what they worth.
“The women should be getting $500K per athlete. Snoop Dogg says so.
“Them girls have won four World Cups, and £90K? Man, please.
“Pay them $500K per player – Snoop Dogg says so.”
The US women’s national team are currently embroiled in a pay dispute with the US Soccer Federation regarding the inequality.
Following their victory at yesterday’s world cup final, fans at the stadium chanted “equal pay” in support of the women’s campaign.
Both Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez and speaker of the House of Representatives, Nancy Pelosi, have extended an invitation for the women’s team to visit the US Capitol following yesterday’s win.
The offers came after Megan Rapinoe, the team’s co-captain, previously said, “I’m not going to the f*cking White House”, due to her opposition to President Trump’s policies.
In response, Trump called Rapinoe out on Twitter, stating that she should “WIN before she TALKS.”
In comparison, Pelosi congratulated the team for winning with “strength, unity and patriotism.”
“I’m pleased to invite the players to the US Capitol or as a team or individually to celebrate your inspiring victory,” she wrote.
