Snooker star Matt Selt fined after sending abuse to autistic fan

Matthew Selt has been fined £2,000 after calling an autistic fan a "pervert” and another slur.

The snooker star, became embroiled in a spat with the fan, believed to be from Ellesmere Port, on Instagram earlier this year. Selt was unaware of the fan's autism when he launched into a barrage of disgusting insults after the fan sent him a direct message.

The 37-year-old had posted a story about Ronnie O'Sullivan when the fan, who is believed to be from Ellesmere Port, replied: "When's your match Matt??" with a cry-laughing emoji. The message referred to Selt's absence from the World Championship.

Selt was forced to appear before the WPBSA Disciplinary Committee, where he admitted breaching the WPBSA Rules and his players contract. As well as his fine, the snooker star was warned regarding his future conduct and ordered to pay £1,000 in costs, the Daily Star reports.

He is said to have been apologetic and claimed he regretted his actions. The incident occurred after the fan replied to Selt's Instagram story of O'Sullivan missing a pot on a black during his first round win over David Gilbert.

Replying to the fan's jibe, Selt used a number of slurs to describe him. The unnamed fan then said: "Awww jealous much," to which Selt responded: "Yea very jealous."

The world no. 21 then completely lost his cool after being sent a thumbs up emoji. He fired off a string of abusive messages, including one which cruelly abused the autistic supporter.

"Enjoy your golf mate," replied the fan. Selt responded by asking the snooker fanatic to unfollow him. The fan said: "I would say please give up snooker but you kinda already have!"

That prompted yet another expletive-laden reply from Selt.
