Snooker's Steve Davis is now a techno DJ spinning the decks at Glastonbury

He was once a legendary snooker World Champion, but since potting his final ball Steve Davis has become a regular on the techno music scene.

And as he prepared for his midnight DJ slot at Glastonbury on Friday, the sporting star compared himself to Benjamin Button, saying: “I didn’t know my life would turn out like this.

“You haven’t got a clue... it’s ridiculous.”

The 61-year-old six-time former world champ says his snooker playing pals are “curious and amused” by his career change.

And Steve seems to be just as baffled as they are.

“My life seems to have gone in reverse,” he laughs as we catch up ahead of his slot.

“I started off as a snooker player practising for eight hours a day in a dark room, and I ended up at Glastonbury DJing.

“You just don’t know what is going to happen.”

He’s also formed a new band, The Utopia Strong, and is set to release an album in September.

“With the band and album,” he explains, “we didn’t plan it, it just happened. What a lovely surprise.

“There is an element of Benjamin Button going on which is surreal.

“This road happened because of not saying no to things. It’s better to say OK.”

But one thing he won’t be agreeing to is watching any of the big acts up on the Pyramid stage.

“I’ll be trying to seek out small tents,” Steve smiles. “I don’t think Janet Jackson needs my approval.”

In fact, he’s more thrilled about performing at obscure fest The Delaware Road near Stonehenge in August where all sorts of music, theatre and film works are showcased.

He explains: “The Delaware Road festival has cutting-edge music with electronic artists and experimental film. I’m more excited about that.

“At Glastonbury I’ll be far away from the Pyramid stage musically.”

Despite performing at gigs throughout the summer, he says he has swerved taking any drugs.

“I come from another world,” he laughs.

“The snooker world is not that way so it passed me by. Music is my drug of choice. I’ll be having a few beers though, the legal ones.”

Even after a few ales, Steve – who was nicknamed Mr Boring as a snooker pro – adds: “I don’t think you’ll see me swinging on a wrecking ball naked. I’ll leave that to Miley Cyrus.”
