Saturday Night Live fans have put Jeff Goldblum forward as the best actor to portray the fly that landed on Mike Pence’s head during last night’s vice-presidential debate.
The insect caught the attention of many viewers on Wednesday night when it settled on Pence’s white hair, while he was asked about racial injustice.
Social media promptly went abuzz with talk of the fly, which included many suggestions that Goldblum should be tasked with portraying the bug on the next episode of SNL.
Goldblum played the titular character in David Cronenberg’s 1986 film The Fly, in which a scientist turns into a fly-human hybrid.
For that reason, many thought Goldblum would be the perfect actor to portray the debate fly in the likely event that SNL stages a skit inspired by Wednesday’s debate between Pence and Kamala Harris.
“We need to get Jeff Goldblum on Saturday Night Live to recreate the fly,” one person tweeted.
“I hope SNL gets Jeff Goldblum to play the fly on Pence’s head,” someone else wrote.
SNL returned for a 46th season on 3 October, with Chris Rock as host and Megan Thee Stallion as musical guest. The 45th season ended with three remote instalments due to the coronavirus pandemic.
This week’s episode, scheduled for 10 October, will have Bill Burr as its host. Country singer Morgan Wallen was supposed to appear as the musical guest but announced on Wednesday his slot has been dropped after he broke Covid-19 protocols.
