Snickers in Edinburgh protest to demand bank holiday for Scotland Euro return

Snickers have demanded the Scottish Government hand the country a day off ahead of the Tartan Army’s return to the international tournament stage next week.

Steve Clarke’s national side face the Czech Republic at Hampden in their opening Euro 2020 group stage game next Monday - the mens' side's first finals match since the World Cup in 1998.

But with the clash is slated to kick off at 2pm in the afternoon, some members of the Scotland faithful are at risk of missing out due to the game being played during work hours.

The confectionary staple, who are a sponsor of the national side, have called on Nicola Sturgeon to do the right thing through the #Snickers4Scotland campaign, branding the lack of a bank holiday to commemorate the occasion “unacceptable”.

A petition demanding a temporary shut down has been launched, shattering its initial target of 100 signatures in a matter of minutes, with Snickers promising free chocolate for everyone in Scotland if they are successful.

A giant Snickers bar was spotted protesting the decision outside Edinburgh Waverley on Monday morning before taking the campaign to the doors of the Scottish Parliament.

The petition reads: “It has been 23-years since the Scotland men's team last qualified for a major football tournament.

"After such a long wait, Scotland’s first match kicks off at 2pm. On a Monday. During work hours.

"That just won’t do. We think this is totally unacceptable. So, we’re asking the people in power to give everyone in Scotland the day off on June 14th – the day of the first game.

"If they do, there’ll be free Snickers for Scotland.

"Sorted. Over to you, Government."

Scotland warmed up for their return from the international tournament wilderness with a 2-2 draw against the Netherlands at the Estadio Do Algarve in Portugal before a narrow 1-0 win over Luxembourg courtesy of Che Adams' first half strike.

Clarke's men face England in an Auld Enemy showdown at Wembley on June 18 in their second group game before taking on Croatia at Hampden on June 22.

The petition can be signed here.
