Snickers chocolate bars to be called by 'proper name' Marathon 30 years after rebrand

Snickers chocolate bars will be called by their former name Marathon once again in a rebrand.

Back in July of 1990, the bars sold in the UK and Ireland under the name of Marathon, were replaced by the name Snickers.

But a 'retro edition' of the nutty treat is now on sale in Morrisons supermarkets for the next three months.

The chocolate's brand director, Gemma Buggins, explained to the Mail on Sunday that the switch up is to celebrate 85 years of Mars making chocolate in the UK.

"Bringing the Marathon bar branding back for a limited time really was a no-brainer," she said.

"It's a great way to celebrate more than 85 years of Mars making chocolate in the UK and we hope this serves as a wonderful treat for fans of Snickers who remember when it was called Marathon."

The limited edition version of Marathon will be sold in Morrisons as a four pack for £1.

This means each bar will cost as low as 25p, close to its original cost in the 90s where they were sold for 24p each.

Morrisons customers who are old enough to remember the original bar have shared their joy over the rebrand.

And some loyal fans have even admitted to refusing to call the bars Snickers for the past three decades.

"About time too... I’ve refused to eat them for the last 3 decades!" while another confessed: "I'll never call them Snickers. Never."

Olympian Aly Dixon played on the meaning behind the name of the chocolate pairing as she thanked the supermarket for 'making it possible'.

One Marathon fan said the bars are back to their 'proper name' and wants to campaign to get them sold in other supermarkets.
