Snell, Kentucky make statement with 28-7 upset of No. 14 Mississippi State

LEXINGTON, Ky. _ It started with emojis crying cartoonish emoji tears from laughing so hard.

And it ended with a substantial reply from Benny Snell on Saturday night at Kroger Field.

Snell's response to a Mississippi State running back's tweet: 165 yards and four touchdowns and a 28-7 Kentucky upset over the No. 14 Bulldogs on Saturday night.

To be more clear: After a win last week over Murray State, the UK running back was asked about facing one of the most stout rush defenses in the nation.

After complimenting the Bulldogs, Snell replied: "I'm going to run on any team. You could be an NFL team and my college team, it don't matter. This offense don't fear nobody. I know they're good, but this offense is good, too. It's going to be fun."

The video made its way to Starkville and led to the Bulldogs' Kylin Hill retweeting it with those pesky emojis. It was taken down later in the day.

Snell's ultimate reply came on Saturday after his third touchdown of the game, a 36-yard run to put the Cats up 21-7 midway through the fourth quarter also broke Kentucky's career touchdown record formerly owned by Randall Cobb. Snell now has 39 career TDs.

All of this drama played out with the appropriate amount of moody, rainy nastiness in front of a rowdy crowd of 60,037 at Kroger Field that watched UK move to 4-0 and 2-0 in the Southeastern Conference.

It was the Cats' first victory over a ranked team at home since 2015 and it was the first time the team has beaten ranked opponents in back-to-back games since the 1976 and 1977 seasons when it won five in a row over ranked foes.

The victory was UK's first over a ranked Bulldogs team since 1953.

Kentucky held the Bulldogs (3-1, 0-1) to 201 yards of offense while amassing 300 yards of its own.

The UK defense was paced by Darius West's nine tackles. Jordan Jones added eight and Kash Daniels' seven.

Josh Allen was outstanding with six tackles, including two for loss and a quarterback sack.

Nick Fitzgerald was held to 20 yards rushing and completed 16 of 32 passes for 145 yards, with one pick, gobbled up by UK redshirt freshman Tyrell Ajian.
