Sneinton residents wishing for gym, pub or cafe in place of former community centre

The ‘disposal’ of the Sneinton Hermitage Community Centre on Hermitage Walk was approved by the city council on November 5th.

There will however be a new community centre located where the old library used to be on Sneinton Boulevard - which is yet to open.

It is unclear what the building on Hermitage Walk will be transformed into.

Nottinghamshire Live spoke to residents about what they would like to see replace Hermitage Centre as it “shouldn’t be left untouched.”

Mohammed Ahmed, 35, unemployed, told Nottinghamshire Live:

“It would be a good idea to have something useful that people will benefit from.

"Maybe a gym, a bit of an odd place but it would save people going into town or elsewhere. I don’t know how much space there is in there but if it’s big enough, a gym,” said the Sneinton resident.

Mark Carthy, who works at NTU and also lives in Sneinton, said he wants to see something cultural in the space.

"A cafe, or sort of art gallery, something where people can show work," said the 50-year-old.

"There's a lot of artists around here. I'd love this space [outside the community centre] to become a market to show a bit of vitality. No more apartments or student accommodation. Just something to put a bit of life back into the community."

Habib Rehman, 44, is unemployed and although from Radford comes to Sneinton "quite often".

He thinks that it would be good to have some kind of shop on the site, if the pricing was right.

"Maybe an Asda," he said. "I don't know what they could turn it into. I had never been to the community centre. A shop could be nice, a nice cheap one."

Sneinton resident Ruth Jones, 45, and unemployed wasn't so keen on that idea though.

“I’m not sure, we have a lot of shops already," she said. "Maybe a cafe, there’s too many corner shops round here and people will just go in there for alcohol and cigarettes most of the time. Maybe a cafe will break that up a bit.”

Retiree Jeff Shaw, 77, told Nottinghamshire Live, said he hoped something with the community in mind would be able to flourish.

"I'd like there to be a meeting place, we've got nothing down here," said Mr Shaw. "A pub would make a change - but they're getting more expensive now."

Michele Campbell, one of the chair’s for the new community centre in the library, said she has high hopes for the future when asked about the venue switch last month.

Ms Campbell said: “We’re looking forward to getting more of the community involved in the designing and delivering of services. From now up until next year we’ll be getting the community more involved. At the community centre, everyone working here will be committed to helping the people of Sneinton and providing different services. There’s exciting things to come, so watch this space.”
