Sneaky Midlothian thief caught on camera raiding play hut and shed

A Midlothian thief has been caught after raiding outbuildings through the night, with one resident capturing doorbell footage after he made off with several items from her shed.

Caught skulking around in the early hours of Monday morning, August 15, the thief was breaking into sheds in the Dalkeith area with the woman, who prefer to remain anonymous, saying he took items from her shed as well as decorative lighting in the garden.

The video, which appears to rumble the unsuspecting crook, shows several items in his hand before creeping around in the resident's back garden. Taking to Facebook, the woman informed other locals to make sure their sheds and outbuildings were secure, as she maintains the perpetrator is known to locals in the area.

She said: "Would like to make everyone aware that there is a thief going around. My shed was broken into at 3.50am Monday morning, he got away with a lot of stuff and also helped himself to my garden ornaments and garden lights. Make sure your sheds are secure, he clearly didn't see my ring doorbell."

Speaking to Edinburgh Live she said: "I went to bed as usual on Sunday night I woke up at 5.30am Monday morning so as usual I went into my spare room to open the windows, that when I noticed my back gate, my play hut and my shed door was open.

"I went down and that's when I noticed lights and an ornament missing out the garden. I then went to my shed and that's when I realised they had been broken into. So I checked my ring app on my phone and it showed the guy creeping around my garden with the set of lights that was taken from my plant pot.

"Then I started to check what was all missing. So I wasn't going for bother calling the police but then I changed my mind because he needs to be stopped from doing this."

A Police Scotland spokesperson said: “We received a report of a break-in and theft from a shed at a property on Woodburn Court in Dalkeith on Monday, 15 August, 2022, which happened around 3.40am that morning. Enquiries are ongoing.”
