'Sneak peek' inside £30m refurbishment of Nottingham Castle

The trustees behind the refurbishment of Nottingham Castle have shared a striking first look of the building from within.

Nottingham Castle - which is actually a Ducal mansion - was built in the 1670s by one Henry Cavendish, the second Duke of Newcastle.

It was once in fact, a motte-and-bailey castle (owing to the hill the building now stands upon) some 600 years prior following the invasion by William the Conqueror.

Today the elegant building is undergoing a huge £30m restoration following its closure in July 2018.

Work has been affected by the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, but trustees and the project director, Richard Hamblin, say it is on track for opening in 2021.

The new Castle experience aims to combine interactive, virtual technology including Robin Hood folklore alongside high-quality art exhibitions, to bring Nottingham's 1,000-year history to life.

One of the Nottingham Castle Trust's trustees, Susan Hallam, who previously founded the award-winning digital marketing agency, Hallam, has provided an inside look at the project.

Sharing a picture of the restoration, she said: "Sneak peek with my fellow trustees to look round Nottingham Castle, to see first hand the high level of conservation and innovative design being delivered by the team at Nottingham City Council, as the transformed Castle is nearing completion ready to be opened in 2021."

Work on the castle includes newly-refurbished gallery spaces, a new lighting system has been installed at the Mortimer's Hole cave to create a safe and engaging atmosphere, as well as a new adventure play area.

Live-action filming has also previously taken place over the summer months for the Robin Hood visuals, and these performances will feature as part of the Robin Hood gallery’s immersive film experience.

The exhibitions and galleries will also feature backdrop images and plinths have been installed ready for art collections and objects to be added.
