Snapshot of Armistice street party among London war photos in centenary exhibition

This photograph of Londoners celebrating the Armistice at a street party in Marylebone is featured at an open-air exhibition to mark the centenary.

The picture, taken in Penfold Street, is among several poignant images showing how those on the Howard de Walden Estate and Portman Estate lived during the First World War — and the hardships they faced.

They are going on display in Portman Square Garden, one of the private squares which was opened to the public during the war.

Andrew Hynard, chief executive of the Howard de Walden Estate, said: “One of the aims of the exhibition is to cast a light on the hardship the war brought to people’s everyday lives but also how it was an instigator for societal change."

“These images capture this transformative time and unique moments of people’s lives living on the two estates.”

The images will be on display until November 11.
