Snake warning for Scotland as adders slither out of hibernation

Scots cops are urging people to stay safe around snakes after a number of sightings of adders.

Officers from the Argyll and West Dunbartonshire police division urged caution when out and about as the adders come out of hibernation.

Numerous sightings in the Tarbert area have been reported over the weekend.

Adders are venomous snakes and usually bask in the sunshine in woodland glades and on heathlands.

An adder bite is a very rare occurrence, and can be painful, but is almost never fatal.

A statement by Argyll and West Dunbartonshire police read: "Adders are coming out of hibernation now.

"The snake is not aggressive and usually only bites when alarmed or disturbed.

"Bites can be very painful, but they are rarely fatal.

"Sightings have already been noted in the Tarbert area."
