Snake found on the loose in Weston as RSPCA look for owner

A snake thought to have escaped from someone's home has been found on the loose in Weston-super-Mare .

The corn snake was spotted near the town hall in Oxford Street on Wednesday (August 28), according to the RSPCA.

Somerset Live reports a member the public saw the 60cm reptile on the pavement and called the charity for help.

The corn snake was found to be healthy and taken to a nearby centre.

The RSPCA has now urged prospective reptile owners to thoroughly research the needs of particular species before buying one.

Inspector Hayley Lawrence, who helped the snake get to safety, said: “We’re keen to find out where the snake has come from, and if possible reunite with an owner.

“As there is a possibility that this snake has escaped from someone’s home, it is a good reminder to snake owners to ensure that their animals’ accommodation is secure.

“Snakes are not only good escape artists, they, like other exotic pets, are completely reliant on their owners to meet their welfare needs and so can be challenging to care for.

"Anyone thinking of taking on that responsibility needs to thoroughly research what it entails before deciding to commit to getting one.”

Hayley added: “Sadly, reptiles often end up in the RSPCA’s care after people realise they're not easy to care for or once the novelty wears off.

"Others are rescued after they have been abandoned, escaped or been released on purpose, which then could be a risk to our native wildlife.”

The RSPCA added that people should only consider keeping a snake if they can ensure they are fully able to provide for these needs.
