The director of a Perthshire potato grower wants to convert a derelict “eyesore” building in Inchture into a coffee shop and snack bar.
George Taylor of Taypack Potatoes has applied for consent to modify an old graffiti-covered telephone exchange on Moncur Road close to the village church, and add a couple of extensions to create the new business.
A design statement prepared by planning consultancy GD Planning on behalf of Mr Taylor envisages the new eatery will have outdoor seating areas and a shelter for customers too.
It says: “This application seeks the physical upgrade of a derelict building within the village of Inchture, the introduction of a new use and the erection of two new service buildings adjacent.
“The existing building has been unused for many years and its condition has deteriorated over time such that it has become a hazard and a local eyesore.
“The applicants are a local company employing many staff with family, many of whom live in the village.
“The applicants bought the building last year and have been keen to deliver visual improvement to the site, whilst also providing a new use which can enhance community facilities and provide local employment opportunity.”
The design statement adds: “The applicant’s target market are primarily local residents, users of the core path network and recreational cyclists, including those using the National Cycle Route.
“To encourage use of the site as a waypoint, cycle storage facilities are incorporated within the proposed layout. It is not expected that the site would become a specific car-borne destination. ‘‘
