Smyths Toys issues statement to customers after crazy queues outside Dublin stores

Smyths Toys has issued a message to customers after people flooded to its Dublin stores this morning.

The popular franchise assured customers that it has large levels of stocks in a bid to prevent huge crowds gathering at once.

In a statement, the company said: "To all our customers: We have good levels of stock with more arriving each week.

"We expect our stores to remain open. Please continue to observe social distancing and wear masks when shopping."

The message came after massive queues were reported at shops on the Kinsale Road in Cork as well as the Airside Retail Park in Dublin.

Queues stretched right around the stores with people socially distancing as they waited to get inside.

Dave Dalton, who works next door to the Kinsale Road shop, said there were queues both ways for both click and collect and shopping in store.

He said there was around 40 to 50 people in each line.

Tony Smyth was outside Smyths in Carrickmines, Dublin and said it took him about 30 minutes to get inside.

The panic Christmas shopping has been brought on by the leaks on Sunday night that NPHET wanted to move Ireland to Level 5, along with the chain releasing its festive season stock today.

If Level 5 was to be agreed upon, non-essential shops like Smyths would have to close down for a time.

However, the Government is set to reject such a drastic move and move the country to Level 3 instead - with no change to Dublin and Donegal.
