Smuggled cigs by border worth B50m

SONGKHLA: Smuggled cigarettes worth 50 million baht have been seized from a house in Songkhla's Hat Yai district.

They were found at a house in tambon Kho Hong by excise officials and soldiers on Tuesday evening.

The seized goods were taken to Hat Yai police station for further examination and clues to those behind the contraband.

Phanupong Sriket, chief of Regional Excise Office 9's prevention and suppression unit, said the cigarettes were brought into the country by a network of smugglers for distribution in Hat Yai and the South.

The smuggled cigarettes sell for half the usual retail price, he said.

Border officials said contraband such as this is often smuggled in using boats and pickups fitted with concealed roof compartments.
