What’s Going To Happen
The hope is for the primetime ABC game to be everything the American Athletic Conference needs to showcase its product, and it has two terrific teams that like to put up points and get into wild shootouts.
These two don’t play boring games.
Memphis lost to Temple a few weeks ago, and it survived in a 42-41 thriller last week against Tulsa – saved by a missed field goal – but this is one of the few teams in the country with the firepower to keep up with the high-octane SMU offense.
Win, and get by Houston, USF and Cincinnati, and it’s off to the AAC title game with a really shot at the Group of Five’s New Year’s Six game.
But doest MU have the defense to keep the high-powered SMU passing game in check? The Tigers have a decent pass rush, but the secondary gave up over 300 yards to Tulsa and ULM in the last four games and can be dinked and dunked on.
SMU survived a battle with Houston last week in the first game it failed to hit the 40-point mark since the opener against Arkansas State.
QB Shane Buechele continues to be effective, even if his accuracy has slipped a bit. He hasn’t hit 60% of his throws in any of the last three games, but the offense keeps on moving.
But the Mustangs can bring a little pressure, too. The D is second in the nation with 36 sacks to go along with 70 tackles for loss, and the Memphis O line allows way too many plays in the backfield.
Memphis QB Brady White will get his deep shots in. The Tigers average more than ten yards per pass, and they’ll keep the pressure on all game long with big throw after big throw, but …
SMU will come up with a few extra third down stops and two key sacks to slow things down late. Buechele will run out the clock with one big third down throw to keep the unbeaten season going.
