What’s Going To Happen
As expected, it’s a showcase game for an American Athletic Conference team making a push for the Group of Five’s spot in the New Year’s Six.
But the wrong team is the one getting the showcase moment.
SMU got its resumé win over TCU a few weeks ago, and nothing is slowing down an offense that’s putting up over 40 points per game with stunning regularity as it rolls through the season unbeaten.
The team is doing just about everything right. It’s razor-sharp at keeping the chains moving, it’s not having a big problem with turnovers, and the defense makes up for teams trying to bomb away to keep up by living in the backfield.
And then there’s Houston.
It’s been a mess of a season in several ways, but it’s got a shot to stay alive for a bowl bid with a win, and it has a chance to come up with a signature moment to launch the Dan Holgorsen era and give 2019 a positive spin.
There’s one big problem with that. Houston has a miserable pass defense.
Shane Buechele and the Mustang offense will fire at will, the defensive front will destroy a turnstile of a a Houston offensive line, and the team will set a quick pace to pull away out of the gate.
The Cougars might be a wee bit inspired in the national spotlight at home, but that will go away after the first quarter.
SMU will roll, and then it’s on to the showdown at Memphis.
