What’s Going To Happen
SMU is still in the race for the American Athletic title and the Group of Five spot in a New Year’s Six bowl, but after the loss to Memphis, it now has to win out and hope to get a little bit of luck.
East Carolina is just dangerous enough to provide a push, and if it can pull off the upset on the road, it still has a shot at going bowling with winnable games against UConn and Tulsa to close out.
Can the Pirates handle the high-powered SMU passing game? Not really. The defense hasn’t been awful, but its issues are against the run more than against the killer passing teams. It’s allowed 41 points or more in each of the last three games, but the offense showed against Cincinnati that it could step up and make a big push.
The Mustangs are a rock-steady lock to push for over 40 points, the defensive front has the pass rush to steadily get to the quarterback, but can Holton Ahlers – who threw for 535 yards and four scores against UC – get hot enough to keep up? Yes, to a point, but not enough.
SMU bounces back with a more consistent offensive punch.
