Smoky oven forces Qantas plane to make emergency landing

The plane was not in the air for long.

The things that come from aeroplane galleys have a notorious reputation, but spare a thought for the Qantas passengers whose kitchen nightmare was a little more serious.

Qantas flight 144 had to return to Auckland shortly after take-off, when smoke began "emanating" from one of the plane's ovens.

The Sydney-bound flight landed safely and was escorted to the terminal by emergency vehicles.

"Engineers have inspected the aircraft and identified a fault with one of the ovens in the forward galley," a Qantas spokesman said.

"We'd like to thank our customers for their patience and understanding and we aim to have them on their way to Sydney as soon as possible."

The flight path shows the direction the plane took off before promptly looping back around to land again.
