Today's racing tips: Newsboy Nap Smokey fancied to fire at Southwell on Thursday

SMOKEY is fancied to follow up a course-and-distance debut win last month with a victory in the Betway Handicap (3.35) at Southwell.


Charlie Wallis’s daughter of Outstrip had done all of her winning on Polytrack and Tapeta prior to rocking up at Rolleston two weeks ago.

But, ridden for the first time by Rhys Clutterbuck - who is on board again here - she hit the bullseye at the first time of asking on Fibresand.
Hitting the front over a furlong out, Smokey held on gamely as in-form favourite Passional came with a challenge inside the furlong to gain the day by a neck.

There’s a 4lb rise in the weights to deal with here, but Smokey can prove up to the job.

At Newcastle, SAISONS D’OR is taken to make light of a share of top weight in the Bombardier “March To Your Own Drum” Handicap (8.30).

A roan son of Havana Gold, Jedd O’Keeffe’s six-year-old sprang back to form on the back of a 123-day break with a half-length success over course and distance on February 16.


During a losing run stretching back a month short of two years, Sainsons D’Or had slumped from a career-high mark of 81 to a British Horseracing Authority rating of 68.

A 3lb rise still leaves Jack Garritty’s mount well treated, and Saisons D’or can go in again.
