Smoker fined after dropping her cigarette butt outside Matalan - TWO YEARS ago

A smoker has been fined after dropping her cigarette butt outside Matalan in Huddersfield - two years ago.

Dominique Jaffier was caught committing the offence at the Beck Road store on August 24, 2017.

The 24-year-old was convicted of the offence in March last year but the case took place in her absence and she only recently found out about it.

She has now pleaded guilty to throwing down litter in a place to which the Environmental Protection Act applies.

She was seen breaking the law by a council enforcement officer at the Ringway Industrial Estate store.

Susan Wilkinson, prosecuting on behalf of Kirklees Council, said that the officer witnessed her dropping the cigarette on the floor outside Matalan.

The officer explained that she had committed an offence and a £75 fixed penalty was handed to her.

Jaffier, of Cowlersley, admitted that she'd made a 'stupid mistake'.

She explained to Kirklees magistrates that she had called up to pay the fine within 14 days.

She said: "I got the answering machine and left a message asking for somebody to get back to me.

"Nobody got back to me and it just slipped my mind."

Magistrates told her to pay the original £75 fine.

She will also have to pay £50 prosecution costs and £30 victim surcharge.
