Smoke visible for miles as crews tackle fire near Nottinghamshire border

Huge plumes of smoke are visible in Nottingham as firefighters deal with an industrial estate blaze on the Nottinghamshire/Leicestershire border.

Leicestershire Live reports that the fire service in Leicestershire received more than 100 calls to the fire at Asfordby Business Park, with the first coming in just before 7.30pm on Wednesday, April 8.

The blaze, which is in a storage area outside one of the buildings on the business park near Melton, has packaging from a warehouse set alight.

A spokeswoman for Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service said: "We received the first call at 7.24pm and we've had over 100 calls. It's very visible for miles around.

"It's an industrial unit that has a packaging stored outside the building so it's actually a fire in the open, rather than a building on fire.

"It's quite a flammable product and it's creating an awful lot of smoke.

"We've been there for a while but I can't say we've got the fire under control yet but we have plenty of resources there to deal with it."

She added there were eight fire engines at the scene as well as a water carrier and a command team vehicle.

No casualties have been reported and there is not yet any report of what caused the blaze.
