Smoke spotted coming from back of Scots bin lorry as rubbish catches fire

Rubbish in the back of a bin lorry caught on fire on a Scots street before quick-thinking staff spotted the smoke to put it out.

The dramatic incident on Monday morning happened while crews were collecting rubbish in the Tulloch area of Perth and Kinross.

As the heavy vehicle drove away some of the waste caught fire in the back.

Workers spotted smoke coming from the back of the lorry and quickly extinguished the flames.

A picture from the scene shows bags of rubbish emptied onto a street as firefighters watch on.

Perth and Kinross council has urged locals to check their waste for embers and not through out batteries or gas cylinders after what they described as a 'very serious incident'.

A statement from the council's waste services team read: "On Monday morning, waste collected from bins in the Tulloch area caught fire in the back of the bin lorry.

"Fortunately the crew spotted the smoke and immediate action was taken to put out the fire without harm to our staff, the public or damage to the vehicle.

"Had swift action not have been taken, this could have been a very serious incident."

It adds: "Householders are please asked to ensure all wastes placed in green bins for collection are fully extinguished.

"This includes materials such as ashes, disposable BBQ’s and cigarette ends.

"Householders are also asked not to dispose of items such as batteries or pressurised gas cylinders as these can ignite when crushed in the bin lorry.

"If you have an item, and are not sure how to dispose of it safely, please get in contact and we can advise. You can either send us a message on here, or email your enquiries to recycle@pkc.gov.uk"
