Smoke seen from Spanish City fire overnight after blaze broke out at back of building

Black smoke seen at the Spanish City in Whitley Bay led to some fears that the recently restored North Tyneside treasure could be on fire.

People passing by the famous seaside building were shocked to see smoke coming from the back of the Spanish City late on Friday night.

Firefighters were called to the area where a "small fire" had broken out behind the building in the courtyard area.

Video footage shows plumes of dark smoke against the night sky coming from the Spanish City.

A fire crew were able to quickly extinguish the fire which took hold just before 11pm.

Thankfully there was only slight damage to the building and restaurants based at the Spanish City are still open on Saturday for takeaways.

The Spanish City Twitter account posted: "As some of you may have seen, we had a small fire at the back of the Spanish City last night. It was extinguished within 10 minutes, no one was hurt and there was little damage to the building.

"We are still open and will be serving food throughout the weekend."

Fish and chip restaurant Trenchers and Valerie’s Tearoom have opened their doors to customers for takeaways only during the coronavirus lockdown.
