Smoke pours from former Ofiveone nightclub building fire in Liverpool city centre

A fire has broke out in part of the former Ofiveone building in Liverpool city centre.

Fire crews from 12 engines are on the scene at Mount Pleasant and Brownlow Hill, after the fire started at around 1.40am this morning.

Smoke was seen billowing out of the disused four storey building, part of which once housed the iconic 051 nightclub.

Fire crews appeared to be focusing on a former bar at the base of the building, which was most recently known as Dickie's but had previously been a Smokie Mo's.

Merseyside police are also at the scene of the fire and have closed a number of rounds surrounding it.

Brownlow Hill in both directions is closed between A5038 Renshaw Street and Clarence Street.

A section of Mount Pleasant is also closed and drivers are being urged to avoid Renshaw Street and Hawke Street.

Utility company is also in attendance to shutdown the external electricity to the building.

Residents and businesses nearby are being urged to close windows and doors by the emergency services.

A Merseyside Fire and Rescue spokesperson said 12 fire engines were on scene throughout the morning.

The incident is ongoing and firefighters are currently working to damp down 'pockets' of fire.

The spokesperson said: "Fire has been suppressed and substantially locked down, as conditions within the building improve, the fire service are currently scaling down the high volume pump in order to aid traffic management provided by Liverpool City Council.

"Crews are working hard to turn over and damp down in sector one with smaller pockets of fire being tackled by firefighters in breathing apparatus. Firefighting will continue on until the blaze is extinguished.

"Engineers on scene continue to isolate the electrical supply to the building.

"Following multi-agency meetings throughout the incident, our attendance has been reduced to 8 fire engines, with the intention to scale down further to 6 appliances."
