Franklin grasslands joins other weekend hazard reduction burns

Firefighters have multiple hazard reduction burns planned this weekend. Picture: ACT ESA

Smoke drift may occur over Canberra this weekend as a prescribed burn begins at the Franklin grasslands, joining other hazard reduction burns underway at Molonglo and Cooleman Ridge in Chapman.

Firefighters from ACT Parks and Conservation Service and ACT Rural Fire Service were conducting and overseeing the burns to reduce the fire risk and increase the diversity of native plant life.

Each of the controlled burns has a perimeter buffer zone of 20 metres.

The northern wind influence on Saturday may create some smoke drift and the Emergency Services Agency is asking that Canberrans only call triple zero in the event of an unattended fire.
