Smoke from Avonmouth Docks fire visible from Wales as blaze continues

Smoke billowing from the blaze at Avonmouth Docks is visible from Wales.

The fire involving around 20,000 tonnes of scrap metal has been raging for much of the night and morning with fire crews still on the scene tackling the flames.

Residents nearby and living in affected areas are being advised to remain indoors where possible and to keep all their windows and doors close.

The smoke is currently drifting from the site in a north-easterly direction.

Fire services have already confirmed that areas as far from Avonmouth as Thornbury, in South Gloucestershire, might be affected by the fallout.

The smoke continuing to issue from the scene is visible from all around the area, with early fears that it might have an impact on traffic on the nearby M5.

Pictures from the coast of Wales are showing a clear view of the smoke across the Bristol Channel. The pictures were taken near the New Severn Bridge, between Portskewett and Caldicot on the banks of the estuary, by Hugh Gregory Photography.

Further pictures sent in by Dan Spencer show the smoke can be seen from Kelston Round Hill, to the west of Bath, which is over ten miles away from the site of the fire.

Fire services have already confirmed the fire is alight in a site containing as much as 20,000 tonnes of scrap metal.

Warnings were put in place early this morning that nearby roads could experience some problems as a result of the smoke.
