Smoke filled the air as firefighters tackled car blaze in Newcastle

Firefighters tackled a car fire which spread to a billboard and fencing.

Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service received a report of a car fire on Bentinck Road, just at the corner of Elswick Road, around 9pm on Thursday.

One crew from Gateshead was dispatched and arrived on the scene at 9.15pm.

The images show firefighters tackling the blaze while smoke and flames can be seen around the billboard.

Crews extinguished the fire and remained at the scene just before 10pm.

A spokesperson for the Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue Service said: "One crew from Gateshead were called to a car fire last night which had spread to a billboard and fencing on Bentinck Road, Newcastle on the corner of Elswick Road.

"They arrived at 21:15 and left the scene at 21:55."
