'Smoke everywhere' in Lhasa

The Tibetan Centre for Human Rights and Democracy (TCHRD), based in exile in Dharamsala, says it has "confirmed reports" that the situation in Lhasa is worsening.

It says the city is "extremely tense" with

smoke everywhere from burning shops and vehicles [...] The police have cordoned off all roads leading in and out of Lhasa with armed paramilitary forces patrolling the streets.

The TCHRD says the trouble started after scuffles broke out between monks attempting to stage a protest and police sent to bar their way.

Mobile phone pictures illustrate the TCHRD's report that separate protests are occurring in Labrang in eastern Tibet.
