Smoke billows over Heaton street after garden fire spreads to back doors

Thick black smoke billowed over a Heaton street this morning after a garden rubbish fire spread to several back doors.

Firefighters were called to Biddlestone Road in the Newcastle suburb shortly after 11.45am on Friday.

Two crews were sent to the scene and found a rubbish fire in a back garden had spread to several doors.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue spokesperson confirmed no-one had been injured but at least one kitchen had sustained smoke damage.

Both crews had left the scene by 1am.

A Tyne and Wear Fire and Rescue spokeswoman said: "We were called out to reports of a fire at an address on Biddlestone Road in Heaton at 11.47am.

"We sent two crews - one from Byker and one from Tynemouth - to the scene.

"Upon arrival, it was discovered it was a rubbish fire in the back garden of a property which had spread to several back doors.

"There has been some damage to multiple doors while at least one property's kitchen has sustained smoke damage.

"No-one has been injured as a result of the incident.

"We would urge residents to be careful when started their own fires. Make sure you have standing nearby and do not leave anything vulnerable next to it."

One resident said they noticed smoke coming through their kitchen window at 11.40am.

"I got worried so I came outside and the back door of one of the houses was burning.

"The fire brigade came straight out and I think they have it sorted now."
