Smoke billows from Newport woods as fire crews tackle two 'deliberate' fires in same park within hours of each other

Fire crews had to attend two "deliberate" fires at the same park within the space of a few hours.

Crew members from South Wales Fire & Rescue service attended St Julian's Park, known locally as Purnell's Farm, in Newport on Wednesday evening at around 9pm after receiving reports of a grass fire.

It came after crew members from Maindee had tackled another fire in the same area at around 2pm earlier that day.

Photos taken last night by a local resident show smoke billowing from inside the park. Residents living in the vicinity left their houses to see what was happening but were kept back by police for their safety.

Carly Jones lives next to the park and said she was at home when she became aware of the commotion.

"I saw flashing lights whilst laying down in my conservatory," she said. "Then me and my partner went outside to see a fire engine and roughly about eight police stood in the street."

Ms Jones said police were preventing residents from getting closer to the fire, which she felt was "definitely deliberate."

"The gangs up here are awful," she said. "It's happened a few times since we have lived here."
