Smoke and shouting as protesters set off flare outside Bristol TUI branch in Broadmead

Protesters set off a smoke alarm while campaigning outside a travel agency branch in Bristol city centre today (November 2).

Activists stood outside the TUI shop in Broadmead this afternoon as they criticised the actions of Turkey.

A passerby, who did not wish to be named, said the scenes must have been "quite scary" for staff in the premises.

Two weeks ago protesters campaigned at the same location, explaining they wanted people to boycott TUI for selling package holidays to Turkey while the country's forces attack Kurds.

During today's protest, which saw a flare let off, banner-waving activists were heard shouting: 'Stop supporting genocide of Kurdish people'.

Police officers blocked the TUI entrance while the smoke alarm rang out.

A passerby said: "It smelt horrible going through, a few people were pushing prams through it looking unimpressed.

"I can imagine it must have been quite scary for the staff inside the TUI store, with loud shouting outside and the flare making it difficult to see what was going on."

During last month's protest, a 31-year-old activist spoke to Bristol Live about the motivations behind the demonstration.

She said: “The people here at TUI are just doing their jobs, and this is not a personal thing against them.

"They probably don’t know what it means to put money into the Turkish economy like this."

She added: “How ever far we are from Kurdistan, we never forget Kurdistan."

Bristol Live made attempts to contact Avon and Somerset Constabulary for comment.
