A smoke alarm has saved a Muswellbrook resident's life after their home caught alight overnight.

Fire and Rescue NSW crews responded to reports of a house fire, aware that the resident could be trapped inside.

Crews arrived to find the house alight and were assisted by firefighters from NSW Fire and Rescue Aberdeen and officers from Hunter Valley Police District.

The fire damaged the home's powerlines and there were live wires across the driveway.

Ausgrid was called to the site to isolate power to the lines and ensure the safety of firefighters.

Fire and Rescue NSW Muswellbrook said that when it was discovered the single occupant had self evacuated, those onsite provided medical assistance while waiting for paramedics to arrive.

The man was transferred to Muswellbrook hospital by NSW Ambulance for observation.

While the fire completely destroyed the home and caused heat damage to the neighbouring property, the value of smoke alarms was clear.

A working smoke alarm woke the only person in the home, who was then able to escape the house safely.

According to NSW Fire and Rescue, the risk of fatality is halved when there is a working smoke alarm in a home.
