Smirnoff vodka is not Russian and neither are Absolut or Grey Goose

Thinking of ditching vodka to protest Russia's invasion of Ukraine? Here's where the top sellers are actually from.

Widespread public anger in response to Russia invading Ukraine has left many of us wondering what can we do to make a difference and to stand with the people of Ukraine. This public focus on vodka comes after Russia invaded the Ukraine and in a bid to show support to the Ukrainian people people and businesses across the world are banning the use and sale of Russian food and drink.

Many bars and restaurants across Wales have said that they plan to discontinue the sale of Russian vodka, part of a wider movement to ditch the quintessential Russian alcoholic beverage.

Vodka is distilled from grains and gets its name from the Russian word "voda," which translates to water, and has long been associated with Russia. However, the top selling brands that people think are Russian are not actually Russian.

Smirnoff was originally a Russian vodka but is now owned by British drink giant Diageo and is made all over the world.

Cîroc is a French brand distributed by the British-based alcoholic beverage maker Diageo..

Glen’s , a favourite from our youth is also produced in the United Kingdom, owned and produced by the Loch Lomond Group, a Scottish company.

Grey Goose is also French, created in the 1990s by Sidney Frank, who sold it to Bacardi in 2004.

Absolut Vodka is a Swedish brand of vodka, produced near Ahus in southern Sweden.

SKYY vodka is an American brand, born in San Francisco, made from American wheat and distilled water.

None of the most popular brands of Vodka in the UK are actually made in Russia. They are made in Sweden, France, the UK and America. However, Russian Standard is produced by a Russian company and Husky Vodka is a Siberian brand of vodka.
