Smirnoff, Gordon's Gin and Johnnie Walker shortages fears after Diageo strike vote

Booze brands including Smirnoff, Gordon’s Gin and Johnnie Walker could dry up after staff at drinks giant Diageo voted to strike.

The action, affecting all of the firm’s Scottish operations, follows the collapse of pay talks.

Keir Greenaway, GMB Scotland organiser, said: “Our campaign for a pay deal that beats the cost of living for our members and their families is a modest proposal against the backdrop of Diageo’s absolutely staggering financial results, which workers in Scotland have more than helped to deliver.”

Diageo reported pre-tax profits of more than £4.2billion and a 30 per cent pay rise for chief executive Ivan Menezes.

The union has accused its bosses of lavishing billions on a share bonanza for rich investors while denying workers a basic pay rise.

A Diageo spokesman said: “We are a very good employer and remain committed to seeking a resolution and ensuring our employees receive an increase on their pay, alongside maintaining the competitiveness of our operations.

“We have well developed contingency plans in the event of industrial action.”
