Smells like team spirit for Silverchair

Team Players: Silverchair's Daniel Johns in the back row, far left. Drummer Ben Gillies at front and centre, holding the bat.

This photo absolutely bowled us over. It shows Silverchair's Daniel Johns and Ben Gillies in an under-12 cricket team.

It was taken around the same time they started the band.

Kim Bauer kept photos and letters she received from Annette Gillies, the mother of the Silverchair drummer.

Kim rediscovered the items while packing up her house, having decided to move to Perth and leave her job as co-host of 2HD's breakfast show with Richard King.

She had been in Newcastle's media scene for about 35 years.

When she was promotions manager at NEWFM, Annette Gillies rang her and asked about getting the Silverchair boys some work experience.

The band was receiving a lot of attention, so the trio couldn't be placed anywhere. Earlier that year, Silverchair's first album Frogstomp was released.

A stint at NEWFM seemed fitting.

"So I said I'd look after them because I'm a mother. Daniel and Ben came in and did work experience," Kim said.

Kim later received a "lovely handwritten note from Daniel".

The letter, dated November 9, 1995, stated: "Dear Kim, Please accept my thanks for taking me for work experience from the 14th to the 18th of August. During that time, I learned a lot about radio programming and other aspects of the radio industry. Please thank everyone who helped us during the time we were there. Yours sincerely, Daniel Johns."

During their work experience at the station, the boys spent time recording "take after take" for American radio stations.

They'd record takes like: "Hi this is Daniel Johns from Silverchair on K-Rock FM".

They were becoming big in America, so Silverchair's record company suggested they record the takes at NEWFM.

'Cutest Picture'

Kim also kept "the cutest picture of Daniel and Ben" in their cricket team before Silverchair found fame.

"We sponsored their cricket team [called NEWFM Rockets] and Annette sent me a picture," she said.

"It's a handwritten note thanking me and saying how the boys were doing in their cricket comp."

The letter said: "A big thank you for supplying shirts to the under-12 indoor cricket team for the upcoming competition at Howzat.

"Enclosed are notes from all the boys expressing their gratitude. They were thrilled to think NEWFM thought them important enough to supply the shirts.

"All the boys play club cricket during the summer, so the competition at Howzat provides them with the opportunity to continue their cricketing through the winter months.

"They should do well and will definitely do their best over the next 10 weeks - they all have a love of the game and are extremely keen."

It was at age 12 that the Silverchair trio formed their band. At that time, it was named The Innocent Criminals. The cricket team also included Tobin Finnane, who was a guitarist with the band before leaving to stay in England with his mother for a year.

The team photo was given to Kim with the boys' names on the back.

The boy next to Daniel Johns was listed as "Simon Capp", but he seems to resemble Silverchair bass player Chris Joannou. Perhaps we're imagining it?

Anyhow, the days of handwritten thank-you notes seem like a different era now, not to mention the rise of Silverchair.
